Spring is finally here! It snowed today, but it's still the thought that counts. ;) School is starting to wrap up (2-3 more weeks of class, then freedom), and I've got a full set of art to work on from commissions, contest winners, and trades. :)

I'm feeling good today, and I've seen people do this before, so...  have any questions about myself or my art? I don't always get to respond to comments and watches (though I read and love every one of them, you all rock!), so sometimes I overlook things. Or sometimes people are too shy. So if there's anything you want to know about my art, go ahead and ask away!

Ohhhh *shivers* when I saw that you were accepting questions I was thrilled...I have been a big fan of your art for a long time, such detail and spiritesque style you have! Anywho on to my question. How do you make wolf fur look so smooth, do you do shadows on the fur first or hight lights?

Generally when I do fur I use the paintbrush tool with tiny strokes then I go back and smooth some of it over with the smudge tool...is this the wrong way to go about this? Here's one of my detailed fur drawings if you want to take a look at it.... [link]

Awww... *blush* :) Thank you much!

I actually use the exact same method as you do -- draw the hair and then smudge it! You're definitely on the right track with your picture of Nanakyi... it looks very nice. The next step for you, if you want a more realistic look, is to start varying the colors in your fur -- take a look at a photo; on a gray wolf's head you've got white hairs and black hairs among the shades of gray.

My process usually goes in this order - Apply base fur color (I floodfill the sketch XD), add shadows, start detaling fur and adding colors, smooth with smudge, add more fur, repeat, and then add highlights. Many artists out there discourage the smudge tool because people tend to overuse it and make it obvious... but as long as it's kept on a low opacity everything should be fine. :)

I just really love your work, also because of my passion for wolves. I'm looking forward to the day that I can get my wolf tattoo.

hey there! how's it going. I have some questions to ask you. Oh and by the way, I love wolves too^^ They are one of the most beautiful creatures on earth< my opinion. Anyways, you and sort of have the same style. I was wondering, when you draw things, do you draw them on paper first and scan them in? Or do you use a tablet and draw on the computer. See I draw some of my drawings on flash, and I have recently been doing dog breeds, would you like one? Anyways, since I don't use layers, and I need to know how to use them. I'll learn someday. You know and I've been trying to get my drawings to look like they are screen shots. but, I'm not sure on how to do it. Do you think that if I outline my drawing in pen, and then scan it in and color it, it will get that kind of effect? because I am just not sure about how to do that. Ohyeah also! I got really inspired by how you painted Commanche on PainshopPro, so I thought I might give my own wolf painting a shot. well first I did a watercolor of my own wolf, and then tweaked it with photoshop> what do ya think?> [link] Oh and do you have any suggestions on how to make the muzzle/nose part not look so blurry. My goal was to make it more realistic looking.

Sorry, I wrote so much. I am jsut so curious

Heya! ^^

TheFelineCanine and I do have similar styles compared to others... I don't try to emulate her, but I do admire her art lots. :)

1. Nope! In this gallery, anyway. I use my mouse to draw right into PSP.

2. Why, sure! If you're looking for more breeds, I've got a few favorites that you haven't drawn yet. Oh, I wish I could get Flash.. I'd be curious to learn how to make an animation. ^^; Layers are your friend, trust me. I don't remember what I did without them.

3. Screenshots... you mean like cel-shading? Inking it with pen will help, but most people 'ink' their drawings right in the program - that'll give you a much smoother, more official look.

4. I remember that wolf picture... very lovely! It just looks to me that you over-did the smudge tool on the bottom jaw and mouth. Around the mouth there should be different textures... the lips and more defined darker hairs around it. If that happened before you tweaked it, though, try using a pencil of some sort to define the outline just a bit. Take smudging of any sort very slowly, and you'll be fine. :)
